Jennifer Lawrence covers Vanity Fair: fresh & pretty or too sex kittenish?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence covers the February issue of Vanity Fair, and wow. She looks kind of amazing here, right? It’s such a beachy, fun cover for a winter issue, but while JLaw looks very lovely, she also looks a bit like Bar Rafaeli as well. That’s not a terrible thing, of course, but it is a bit surprising because magazines often don’t know what to do with Jennifer (which was quite evident even in her recent Vogue UK spread).

Things are about to get even weirder though. Oddly enough, this is the “awards season” issue, and Jennifer seems quite appropriate for the cover since she’s already been nominated once for the Best Actress Oscar and will probably receive another nom for her work in Silver Linings Playbook. However, the cover caption doesn’t say anything about her talent but only makes mention of how she is “the world’s most desirable woman.” Now, we should expect this sort of behavior from the lad mags (and indeed, Ask Men did just name Jennifer as most desirable of 2013), but doesn’t this seem strange coming from Vanity Fair?

The shoot itself was photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth, who is also responsible for this month’s aggressively precious Zooey Deshanel Glamour shoot. With Jennifer, the vibe here seems to be very sex kittenish and almost reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot with big hair and sultry poses. I never really imagined seeing JLaw draped over the hood of a car in a cheesecake booty pose but here she is doing just that.

Jennifer Lawrence

So far, Vanity Fair hasn’t released much of the interview, but here are some scant excerpts:

On maintaining balance: “I love filmmaking. I love acting but I don’t feel married to just being in front of the camera.”

She’s trying to find a house: “I’m a nomad. I just looked in New York and I was looking in LA and I can’t figure out where I want to live.”

[From Vanity Fair]

I apologize for providing little in the way of discussion as far as textual excerpts go, but the full interview has got to be juicier and will hopefully be released soon. One very good thing has arrived in this editorial, however, which is a throwback shot of Jennifer in a red, booby dress much like the Calvin Klein number she wore two years ago. Maybe it is the same dress. Who knows?

Her best magazine shoot to date.

I’m being serious. So many of her spreads havejust looked God-awful.

I quite like this side of her, it intrigues me more than her typical dull interviews and responses. This makes me think there’s a part of her that kinda got a kick out of being a little Bardot just once in a while.

    • V4Real says:

I agree… I think she looks beautiful and it doesn’t look try hard or sleazy. They got it right with this one. One of the best mag cover photos of a female celebrity I have seen in awhile.

  2. marie says:

she looks good but some of those photos look way too photoshopped right? or is that just me?

    • Amelia says:

      +1 Marie, I was thinking ~
“Hmm… I don’t remember Jennifer looking like this.”
It’s subtle, but you can tell there’s something a little ‘off’. I think they’ve shaved away a bit of her arms.
I really like the cover, the daisy is quite cute.

    • MSL says:

I totally agree! It looks like her face has no dimension. Like they overexposed the pictures or something. The same with Zooey Deschanel. Something doesn’t look natural that’s for sure.

    • phlyfiremama says:

I agree Marie! It’s a lovely photo shoot~but the one and only picture that is to my eyes identifiable as JLaw is the one on the red car. Whats up, photoshop?!

  3. stephanie says:

    those leopard pants are horrible.

  4. Cyndie says:

She is beautiful. Never like her till now

  5. FirstTimer says:

She looked great here. I’ll definitely buy this issue of VF.

  6. Rikki says:

    Thought it was Hilary Duff.

  7. ernie says:

Finally a makeup artist who figured out how to do her eyes properly. I love this spread. She looks amazing.

  8. Nat says:

In the photo on the Contents page, I mistook her for Yvonne Strahovski!

  9. tracking says:

She just seems too forthright for the sex kitten thing. Not that she doesn’t look great, but she doesn’t really look like herself.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Agree..I think she’s too down-to-earth for this look, although it is fun and she looks fantastic.

  10. Jordan says:

Wow….I agree, it’s Jennifer’s best shoot to date. It’s both beautiful and sex kittenish (channeling Bardot and the French New Wave). As far as the cover caption is concerned….not sure why it was worded that way. However, when you look at this cover (fun, sexy, beachy, etc.,) and then watch Jennifer on screen as Tiffany,(in SLP)you realize just how fantastic she was in the film. Tiffany is definetly sexy, but also definetly NOT the lighthearted looking young woman we see on the VF cover. Lawrence really nailed the part of Tiffany.

    • Stormy says:

I can’t wait to see it.I personally think she made the perfect Katniss. Some people disagree, which is fine. But she nailed Katniss.

  11. Jess says:

They thinned out her face and arms and erased all of her moles on the cover. They made her look like Bar Rafaeli.

  12. mel says:

It is not weird, Kaiser. Sadly, Jennifer is as scripted as Anne Hathaway. Her team, Anonymous Content and CAA, are trying to make her the new Angeline Jolie or something aka a bombshell that can act (subjective).
Everything Jennifer does and says is meant to be for something. VF putting that on the cover is a shout out to Academy voters to go “wow, yeah, she’s the sexiest, let’s vote for her”.
In an ideal world, Jennifer wouldn’t even get a nomination for that crappy performance; there are, at least, 3 or 4 actresses that have given more complex performances than her but because she has Harvey Weinstein and CAA behind, she’s the one getting in. Not to mention that one of those actresses is a BEAUTIFUL WOC and getting a nomination could skyrocket her to the moon.
This “lolita” look is meant for people to forget about everything and vote for her-and yes, Academy people are that stupid.
However, I think she looks lovely here, the best of her so far but those are some weird poses.

  13. pretty says:

The cover picture looks like she has a cone-head. lol

  14. Ann says:

Geez. Vanity Fair does the novel: young actress, let’s make her SEXY!!!! photo shoot. *snooze*

  15. Talie says:

She has a naturally puffy face, so she doesn’t always photograph well. The reason these photos work is because they did some photoshopping on her cheekbones. I agree though, best shoot to date and the even the photoshopping isn’t too obvious at first.

  16. Ri says:

    Too much photoshop.

  17. A says:

The cover looks amazing, but they photoshopped her cheeks in every photo.

  18. Reece says:

Best shoot yet. She looks great in retro when it’s done well.
Is that the dress she wore to the Oscars?

  19. Jules says:

I agree that it’s her best shoot to date (LOVE the shot of Lawrence in the red Ralph Lauren dress….I want that dress). I love Jennifer’s interviews; she’s funny and is very down to earth. I thought Jennifer kicked ass in Silver Linings Playbook and I’m really looking forward to Serena….can’t wait for that one, with Lawrence playing a real Lady MacBeth type of villain.

  20. Sweet Dee says:

I think this is a great photo shoot of her, and I’m sick of her interviews anyway so I don’t mind that!

Can I also just say THANK YOU to Vanity Fair for making those hideous side bangs go away. Gawd, those were terrible. Sometimes winged, sometimes not–always awful. She looks great with them gone.

  21. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I think the shape and features of her face are interesting, so it’s just a shame and disservice to photo shop them away. Gorgeous, unique-looking girl, who, in this shoot, just looks gorgeous.

  22. midnightmoon says:

I especially like the last one with the bobby pin in her mouth. The cover photo makes her smile look bizarre.

This comes closest to helping her look amazing. She is amazing but I think the overexposure is gonna kill her off soon. Too bad.

I have completely given up on Vanity Fair. Their racist elitist article choices and cover choices have made me ill for the past few years. I used to devour every edition. Miss the great reporting but it’s like they’ve xeroxed themselves into a pale shadow of their former glory and can’t seem to grow.

Time for Grading (the editor) to step down…

  23. Rachel says:

How are her boobs that high????? Sorry. I’m 40. And jealous.

  24. Ginger says:

I’m partial to retro pin up and jlaw has the body for it so I love this shoot!

  25. Linda says:

I LOVE the cover photo! Jennifer has such a pretty smile they should always have her smiling on their covers.

    • Belle says:

Here I was thinking that having the flower in front of her smile helped her out. For some reason, though I like the girl, I can’t stand her smile. It just looks awkward and/or forced in every photo I see.

      • Linda says:

The flower did help her out, it softens up the sex kitten image they were going for. But I gotta disagree with you about her smile, I think its cute! And yeah I like her alot too!

  26. Dawn says:

Wow..now that’s a photo shoot! I like it. Very well done.

  27. Mazunte says:

I love the photo in B&W (very BB) and the provocative one on the car. She gives a great 60s look.

  28. denise henderson says:

    wow. she looks really good.

  29. Diana says:

She looks really amazing in the cover, the red dress picture and the last pic, really really beautiful.

  30. I Choose Me says:

LOVE the cover and all the other shots even the draped on the hood of the car one. Finally! A photographer who knows how to bring out the best in their subject. That pic of her in the red dress is ah-mazing and that one of her with the bobby pin is awesome as well.

  31. Alison says:

She looks A-MAZING! She is SO cute and cat-like. I love it. She’s definitely what ‘sexy’ should look like.

  32. Kate says:

    How about too photoshopped.
